Do we take more risks when we are overtired? Do we act against our ethical principles when the clock shows certain times? We will explore these and other questions from the interdisciplinary field where chronobiology meets social psychology. In particular, we want to understand how circadian rhythms – our internal biological clocks – and sleep affect our social behavior and decision-making processes.
Through a mix of theoretical insights and practical experiments, we will learn about the biological foundations of circadian rhythms, the methodology of chronobiological research, and the effects of these rhythms on everyday social behaviors. |
| Lernziele |
The course pursues the following learning objectives:
(a) Understand and critically evaluate methods for measuring biological rhythms.
(b) Discuss current studies that examine the influence of biological rhythms on various aspects of social behavior.
(c) Conduct a self-experiment to measure sleep-wake rhythms and interpret the results in the context of social behavior. |

Successful completion of the course requires regular attendance and active participation, including the design and implementation of an individual self-experiment and the submission of a written summary report describing and discussing its procedure and findings.
IMPORTANT: In order to earn credits and participate at the exam registration via Uni Portal within the exam registration period is MANDATORY. As this is a block course the registration and deregistration runs from October 29 - December 9, 2026 Further information: www.unilu.ch/en/study/courses-exams-regulations/health-sciences-and-medicine/exams/ |

| Hinweise |
The course combines theoretical input sessions with hands-on practical work. Students will engage with key concepts and methods in sleep research, chronobiology and social behavior, and apply them in a self-designed experiment. This includes the development of a measurement approach, data collection, analysis and interpretation. The procedure and results of the self-experiment will be summarized and discussed in a written report. |
